Measuring indoor air quality is the first step towards understanding a space. The challenge lies in selecting useful indicators, interpreting trends and taking action to address the causes.
In this guide, we have set out the key questions and evaluation criteria to help you make an informed decision and have a more objective technical discussion.
Before buying a sensor, identify the problem: discomfort in a busy room, particles associated with a particular activity, persistent odours or humidity levels outside the desired range. Each issue requires different indicators and measurement locations.
PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter. CO₂ can provide information on the ventilation of an occupied space, but it does not measure all pollutants. VOCs refer to a broad range of compounds and require careful consideration of the type of sensor used. Temperature and humidity help to assess comfort levels and the behaviour of the building.
A sensor situated near a window, air inlet grille or local air source may not be representative of the room as a whole. Record trends over comparable periods and make a note of events such as cleaning, occupancy and doors being opened.
The measures taken may include reducing sources, improving air exchange, reviewing filtration or adjusting operations. A further measurement after the measures have been taken will show whether the situation has changed.
